3D-Definitive Design + Decor magazine Editor-in-Chief, Alisa Carroll, delves into the beautiful and mysterious world of Jean Paul Gaultier…
With his first career retrospective, French couturier Jean Paul Gaultier argues that divine and profane love both lead to the same state: ecstasy. The provocative, mysterious and magical Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier is a brilliant exploration—and embrace—of dark and light. Its celebration of human nature is signature Gaultier, a designer recognized for themes of “equality, diversity and perversity.” His is a wildly imaginative aesthetic that transcends boundaries; this is the man, after all, responsible for both Madonna’s cone bra and the man-skirt.
The exhibition opens with a pantheon of virgins, dressed in gowns inspired by both Renaissance robes and fetish-wear. The exhibition goes on to explore six conceptual ranges of Gaultier’s work in fashion, film and music. Beyond the extraordinary couture, ingenious technology plays a central role: throughout the galleries, 30 mannequins come ‘alive’ with interactive faces created by audiovisual projections.
With the intense cross-pollination of the interior design and fashion worlds, I imagine we may soon see a little Gaultier emerge in the salons of San Francisco. The couturier, who asserts, after all, that “Beauty exists everywhere,” has also designed a fabulous furniture collection for Roche Bobois.
